I think the best thing to do here is to approach them. Ask them out for drinks, or a movie. Or just to hang out even. Show them that you don’t bite, at first anyways :D Another good thing to do is start a GSA at your school, or some sort of lesbian event where gals can come together and have fun without the world and demands of academia hanging over their heads.

Yes, there is a such thing as a gaydar! I’m certain that there are other lezzies around. Perhaps they are looking for someone just as you are. A lot of people are afraid, and if they as you seem to, think that there aren’t any lesbos around to soften the blows that can be a part of the coming out process then they will remain safely in the closet. I recommend checking out any gay bars/clubs that might be available  in your area. Or contact your local GSA, Gay Straight Alliance- collegiate or otherwise. There could be set hangouts, or areas where these closet lesbians feel safe enough to express who they are :D
